Prayer Beads for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

There are a number of statements that the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) hold as values.  No Book, but the Bible.  No Creed, but Christ.  Where the Scriptures speaks, we speak; Where the Scriptures are silent, we are silent.

Based on the values, many Disciples might have trouble praying the rosary.  The rosary’s prayers are lifted up to Mary the mother of Jesus – the Scriptures have little to say about praying to our ancestors or saints.  The rosary starts with the Apostles’ Creed.  While Disciples may believe the statements in the Apostle’s Creed, it is not widely recited or held as an important statement about our faith.

Therefore, I have created the Prayer Beads for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  The prayers are based on statements of faith and vision accepted by the Disciples.  Further, the prayers aboveall lift up the value of Discipleship.

May we carry the cross of evangelism,

Rev. Tracy

1)   Affirmation of Faith
This confession is the opening paragraph in the Preamble to the Design of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). It is used by many Disciples congregations in worship as an affirmation of the faith of the church throughout the ages – not as a “test of fellowship,” but as a statement of faith that identifies the Disciples’ commitment to and place within the universal and ecumenical church.
As members of the Christian Church,
[I] confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God,
and proclaim him Lord and Savior of the world.
In Christ’s name and by his grace [I] accept [my] mission of witness
                  and service to all people.
[I] rejoice in God, maker of heaven and earth,
and in God’s covenant of love which binds [me] to God and to one another.
         Through baptism into Christ
[I] enter into newness of life
and [am] made one with the whole people of God.
In the communion of the Holy Spirit
[I am] joined together in discipleship and in obedience to Christ.
At the Table of the Lord
[I] celebrate with thanksgiving the saving acts and presence of Christ.
         Within the universal church
[I] receive the gift of ministry and the light of scripture.
In the bonds of Christian faith
[I] yield [myself] to God that [I] may serve the One
                  whose kingdom has no end.
Blessing, glory, and honor be to God forever. Amen.

2)    Lord’s Prayer

3)    Prayer based on The Vision of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ):

To be a faithful, growing church, that demonstrates true community, deep Christian

spirituality and a passion for justice. – Micah 6:8
God, grant that the church be a faithful and growing community that
demonstrates true community, deep Christian spirituality and a passion for
                  justice. Amen.

4)    Prayer based on The Mission of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ):
To be and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ, witnessing, loving and serving
from our doorsteps “to the ends of the earth.”  – Acts 1:8

Christ, inspire me to be and share the Good News of Jesus Christ, witnessing,
loving and serving from my doorstep to the ends of the earth. Amen.

5)    The Confession of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
As [a] member(s) of the Christian Church,
[I] confess that Jesus is the Christ,
the Son of the living God,
and proclaim him Lord and Savior of the world. [Amen.]

6)    Prayer based on the Disciples’ Statement of Identity
         We are Disciples of Christ,
a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world.
As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord’s Table as God has welcomed us.

Jesus, I call myself your Disciple.  As a part of your body, may I always welcome
all to the communion of souls and grace just as God has welcomed me.  May I be
active in the movement for wholeness in a fragmented world.  Amen.

7)    The Five Fingers:
The first three steps involve human action:
Faith: We make a commitment to Christ by confession of faith
Repentance: We confess that we are sinners and vow to turn away from this way of living.
Baptism: We are baptized by immersion participating in Christ’s death and resurrection.
The last two steps are God’s action as baptism is completed.
Forgiveness: We accept the forgiveness of God
Holy Spirit: We receive the Holy Spirit as our Comforter and Sustainer.

8)    Like the disciple Andrew, I will carry my cross and share the Good News.
The chalice symbolizes the central place of communion in worship for the Christian
Church (Disciples of Christ).  The X-shaped cross of the disciple Andrew is a reminder
of the ministry of each person and the importance of evangelism.

9)    The Four Priorities:
Christ, guide our actions that we may reach our goals of:
                  Becoming a Pro-Reconciling / Anti-racist church
Formation of 1,000 new congregations by 2020
Transformation of 1,000 current congregations by 2020
Leadership development necessary to realize these new and renewed congregations
         Amen.

10) Prayer based on the Disciples’ Statement of Identity
We are Disciples of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world.

As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord’s Table as God has
         welcomed us.

Jesus, I call myself your Disciple. As a part of your body, may I always welcome
all to the communion of souls and grace just as God has welcomed me. May I be
active in the movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. Amen.

11)  I am created by God,

12)  I am redeemed by Christ, and

13)  I am sustained by the Holy Spirit.

14)  Lord’s Prayer

15)  Doxology
Praise God from whom all blessings flow
Praise God all creatures here below
Praise God above ye Heavenly Host
         Creator, Christ and Holy Ghost

16)  Amen.
